About the destination

Salta is a city situated in the Lerma Valley in the North West region of Argentina and also serves as the capital city of the Salta Province. It is a metropolitan area with a population of 619,000 residents, making it the second most populous city in the northwest of the country. Salta is known for its subtropical highland climate and is renowned in Argentina for its exceptionally pleasant weather. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Cabildo, the historic town hall, built in 1783, located on the Plaza 9 de Julio. It currently houses the Museo Histórico del Norte. • MAAM museum. The Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña displays the discovery of the three Inca 'Llullaillaco Children' found frozen at the peak of Mount Llullaillaco. They are among the best preserved mummies in the world (Open Tu-Su and holidays 11AM-7:30PM). • Iglesia San Francisco, situated on the corner of Caseros and Córdoba, built in 1796, is a beautiful church with a remarkable tower. • Cerro San Bernardo, a 1458 m hill located just east of the city center. From Parque San Martin, a cable car ascends to the summit, 430 meters up the hill overlooking the city, offering breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. Alternatively, you can climb 1070 steps up the hill (starting from the statue of Güemes a little north of the cable car station) which takes about 30 mins. A vast water feature with many interesting features has been built at the top. Food and drinks are available at reasonable prices. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours when the weather is clear. • Museo Antropológico. Provides a fascinating insight into various indigenous cultures that have thrived throughout the centuries in this part of Argentina. Located on Avenida Ejército del Norte. • Pajcha. An incredible museum in Salta that is definitely worth a visit. It is called "Pajcha" and showcases a collection of traditional art, textiles, icons, and jewelry from all over South and Central America. The enthusiasm is palpable and it's a fantastic learning experience from a knowledgeable source. • Tren a las Nubes, Train to the Clouds. As the name suggests, it is a day trip by train up in the mountains to La Povorilla at 4220 meters above sea level. The service is currently operated by the Argentine government. It runs from April to November, once a week (Saturday) with extra services during the high season (Easter & winter holiday). The experience is fantastic as the scenery is rugged and variable with a feast for the eyes at every turn. • Museo El Tribuno Guillermo Pajerrito Velarde, Pueyrredon. A wonderful small house-museum that pays tribute to Velarde (1895-1965), who was a lawyer and banker, but more importantly a bohemian patron of arts, especially tango, when it was still not accepted by society in Salta. Open Mo-Fr 10am-2pm,3pm-6pm, Sa 10am-2pm.
